A few miles away, Lydford boasts the deepest gorge in south west England and Lydford Castle, built just after 1066. Rebuilt in the 12th century, it became a notorious prison, which makes it a fascinating sight to visit.

This trail encompasses the Tarka Trail, a 180-mile trail running from Braunton to Meeth, and the Granite Way which runs from Okehampton to Lydford. There’s plenty of wildlife to be seen and an RSPB Reserve near Barnstaple. Okehampton offers a huge range of adrenaline-fuelled outdoor activities from mountain boarding to gorge scrambling! You can also enjoy the ultimate treetop experience at Go Ape! in Haldon Forest, Exeter. The Corscombe area is also a golfers’ paradise, with eight golf courses within 30 miles, including Okehampton course.
