Pendle Hill, occupied since the Stone Age, boasts around 25 ancient crosses, barrows, wells and stone circles. The Pendle witches were tried at nearby Lancaster Castle in 1612. The Pendle area is rich in folklore, with the Devil’s Apronful on Pendle Hill, the Devil’s Footprints at Deerstone Quarry, and an eye, supposed to be the eye of God, carved on the tower of St Mary’s Church in Pendle.

With the Forest of Bowland, an AONB, close by, the area is a haven for wildlife and there are many nature reserves to visit; Alkincoates, with habitats including woodland, meadow and wetland, is home to many birds including snipe, sedge warbler and reed bunting. At Quarry Hill, see kestrels, woodpeckers, jays and tawny owls. The Leeds and Liverpool canal passes to both the east and west of Earby, and narrowboats may be hired to cruise its length. It passes through some fabulous countryside and there’s plenty of wildlife to be seen.

Visit the well preserved medieval castle of Skipton, or Parcevall Hall Gardens, the Yorkshire Dales’ only RHS and English Heritage site. The Yorkshire Dales Mining Museum in Barnoldswick and The Craven Museum at Skipton are well worth visiting. There are seven golf courses around Earby, including Barnoldswick. There’s masses for the kids to do: Lightwater Theme Park boasts Europe’s longest rollercoaster, waterslides and other adrenaline-fuelled rides, and there’s also a shopping village. There are jousting tournaments and more rides at Camelot Theme Park at Chorley. Xscape Castleford offers exhilarating activities including a real snow slope for skiing, tobogganing and snowboarding, and there’s rock climbing walls and even a skate park. Roundhay Tropical World in Leeds has many animals including meerkats, sharks and turtles. Blackpool Zoo and the traditional seaside attractions of Sea Life and Blackpool Pleasure Beach are less than an hour away.
