Exmouth Holidays
Holidays in Exmouth – Devon’s original UK seaside resort town
An Exmouth holiday retraces our Victoria forefathers; Exmouth is recognised as the oldest holiday resort in Devon. The UK seaside resort, whose popularity flourished with the arrival of the railways in 1861, sits on the East Devon coastline at the mouth of the River Exe. To the east end, the town is hemmed in by the High Land of Orcombe cliffs, the peak of which is Orcombe Point. Two miles of sandy beach stretch along the sea front and riverside, and at the opposite shore of the Exe, Dawlish Warren, one of only a handful of natural sand spits worldwide, is populated with rare plant and wildlife.
Exmouth Holidays – Family holidays and watersports
Take a family holiday in Exmouth for a great range of activities. Things to do in Exmouth include sightseeing tours of the town’s historical monuments and architectural places of interest: the architecture here ranges from tiny cottages on the outskirts to Georgian, Victorian and Edwardian architecture, including the traditional seafront promenade. A La Ronde is a 16-sided 18th century house and The Barn an interesting 19th century home. The town is lively all year round; in the winter months the Christmas Cracker, the Christmas Day Swim and New Year’s Eve fancy dress celebrations are events of note, and the rest of the calendar year includes an arts festival in spring, the October Carnival and the sailing regatta in the summer. Sailing is, as you’d expect from the launchpad of many of Sir Walter Raleigh’s adventures, very big here, and in fact all sorts of holiday watersports are available: kitesurfing, windsurfing, powersurfing, body boarding and surfing. Scuba diving holidays in Exmouth are well catered for, with Lyme Bay home to various underwater wrecks.
