Fishing Cottages

Fishing Cottages – Fishing holidays in the UK
Fishing for recreation is an enduring pastime, and with thousands of miles of rivers, lakes and canals, there are plenty of holiday destinations in the UK perfect for booking a weekend cottage or by the week. There are dedicated fishing cottages specifically marketed to appeal to anglers on holiday, but by and large, search out a stretch of fresh water in the UK and you’ll find farm cottages, lodges and even cheap accommodation nearby. Perhaps you’re angling for a fishing holiday that gives you the option of freshwater fishing one day, before taking a boat to sea another for some real variety. Much of England’s coastline is dotted with villages whose primary income is sea fishing, so you might want to search out coastal cottages. Prime areas are where major rivers join the sea: so, fishing cottages close to the River Severn’s mouth near Bristol; the Thames Estuary either in Essex or Kent; the River Trent near the Humber Estuary in Humberside; the River Dart near Dartmouth are all good choices if you want variety on a fishing holiday.

Fishing Cottages – Canal holidays in the UK
The UK has an enviable canal network that’s lined with fishing cottages which used to be lock-keepers’ cottages, although of course there are innumerable holiday homes in the many towns and villages through which they pass. The UK’s best known canals include the Grand Union Canal (which runs between Birmingham and London), the Kennet and Avon Canal (which runs through Wiltshire and Berkshire), and the Manchester Ship Canal. You may want to blend a fishing holiday with a walking holiday, in which case renting a holiday cottage near the Peak Forest Canal takes you into the Goyt Valley, near reservoirs perfect for fishing and on the edge of the Peak National Park – excellent hiking territory. But with so much of the UK criss-crossed with canals, fishing cottages can be found in every county of England and Wales.

Fishing Cottages – Holidays by open water
The UK has some extraordinary freshwater lakes which are perfect for angling holidays. Rent a fishing cottage near the Norfolk Broads; visit the breathtaking views of Loch Lomond or fish for evidence at Loch Ness; stay near Windermere in the Lake District National Park; cross the Welsh border to fish in Lake Vyrnwy Nature Reserve in Powys; or manmade reservoirs and lakes such as Rutland Water, Gradham Water or the Derwent Reservoir in Derbyshire.
