Holidays in Ightham – Relaxing holidays in beautiful surroundings
Book a holiday in Ightham for relaxing UK holidays in a picturesque Kent village. Ightham, which includes the hamlet Ivy Hatch, dates back over 800 years, and the centre of the village is full of half-timbered houses. There are several traditional English pubs in the village, and local folklore claims that the 16th century George and Dragon was where the Gunpowder Plot was planned and where Guy Fawkes was captured. It’s also claimed that Queen Elizabeth I visited the inn. Ightham’s parish church dates back to the 12th century, but Ightham is best known for Ightham Mote – a moated medieval manor house dating back to 1320. Now owned by the National Trust, Ightham Mote includes a crypt, Great Hall, Tudor chapel with hand-painted ceiling and even a Grade I-listed dog kennel. The Mote is surrounded by gardens and water features, and there are some enchanting woodland walks. In fact, the area is ideal for UK walking holidays and even UK horse riding holidays, since the area is criss-crossed with footpaths and bridleways.
Ightham Holidays - Explore the Garden of England
Ightham lies just four miles from Sevenoaks and six miles from Tonbridge, so there are plenty of things to do for all the family on cheap UK holidays here. The 1,000-acre Knole Park in Sevenoaks is home to millions of trees and deer, as well as the 15th century Knole House. Just south of Knole Park is Riverhill House, a 16th century house with gardens open to the public. This area of the North Downs is an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, so nature lovers and ramblers will be more than content here. Tonbridge is a medieval town full of character, and home to one of the greatest motte and bailey castles in the country: Tonbridge Castle. The landscaped gardens run to the edge of the River Medway, and you can walk along the banks to Harsden Country Park. Kent is probably home to more country parks and castles than any other part of the UK.
