For those considering UK holidays – staycations – this year, the choice has never been so great. UK holidays offer you everything from sand to scenery and everything in between. Every child should grow up having built sandcastles on the golden beaches Cornwall, eaten fish and chips on the Blackpool seafront, taken a mini-break to London to see Buckingham Palace and the London Eye, or enjoyed the beauty of the Scottish Highlands. In fact, if you could guarantee the weather on UK holidays, they would be the perfect getaway. Of course, there's plenty for grown-ups, too. The rugged scenery of Northern England, Scotland and Wales is ideal mountain-biking, horse-riding and walking country, while a whole industry has grown up around weekend city-breaks that have opened up the delights of London, Cardiff and Edinburgh to a new target market.

 

Few foreigners are aware of how much awaits them on UK holidays: the British countryside is largely unexplored by foreigners. The mountains of Scotland and the Lake District would be lost among the foothills of the Himalayas, but they concede nothing in terms of beauty. In the east of the country, a different sort of countryside awaits on UK holidays in the form of the flat fenland and broads of Lincolnshire and Norfolk. This is ideal country for taking canal trips or leisurely bike rides. In the West Country, the lovely moorland scenery of Exmoor and Dartmoor gives way to delightful harbours and coves that present great fishing and sailing country. In Wales, the towering peaks of Snowdonia can be explored on ancient steam trains, while the gentler land to the south offers a pretty contrast.

 

The UK might not manufacture things like we used to, but one industry that's booming is holidays and tourism. As you drive the motorways of the UK, you'll spot brown tourism signs every few miles. There's no shortage here of zoos, animal parks, amusement parks, theme parks, castles, museums, stately homes, monuments and visitor centres. It's just as well, because just about the only thing you can't rely on your UK holidays is sunshine.
