East Devon is an area which boasts many historic and scenic attractions. From Uffculme’s working mill and the Museum at Tiverton, which specialises in the social history and agriculture of the area, you are well placed to learn more of Devon’s history. Based in a self-catering country cottage, you can visit nearby Tiverton Castle, built in 1106, with its walled gardens; Killerton House, an 18th century house which hosts a historic costume exhibition, as well as extensive grounds and plant collections, 600-year old Powderham Castle, or Cadhay, a manor house built in the 16th century. Just 14 miles away is Exeter, with its medieval cathedral, famous for its Gothic architecture and Norman towers. Exeter is known for its underground passages, which are surrounded by tales of ghosts and secret escape routes.

Keeping the children happy often involves compromise but in the Uffculme area there’s plenty to amuse the whole family. Close-by, Escot Garden has a maze and wildlife, including otters, birds of prey and wild boar. There are petting farms at Exmouth, which also boasts steam engines, vintage cars and a safari train. For seaside fun, you’ll be spoilt for choice, with Exmouth, Sidmouth and Lyme Regis all less than an hour away, and many safe sandy beaches for the children to enjoy. These seaside resorts all fall within the Jurassic coastline, Britain’s only Natural World Heritage Site, with many areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty and sites of Special Scientific Interest. There are rocks from the Jurassic, Triassic and Cretaceous periods, the area is rich in fossils and you may see dolphins and basking sharks. There’s also a wide range of watersports to enjoy, including snorkelling, scuba diving, sailing and windsurfing.
